The issue

Two decades of microbiome science have shown that microbes matter. In health. Disease. Medicine. Nutrition. Agriculture. The environment. The scientific case has moved fast. Business value has not always followed.

When that happens, the instinct is often to go back to the science. More data. Another cohort. Better validation. Another indication. Sometimes that is exactly right. Sometimes the problem is somewhere else.

The flip

Obvious frame: stronger evidence should create stronger business value.

Bridgyz flip: science only starts to create business value when somebody outside the company has enough reason to change what they already do.

That is a different threshold.

Inside the company, progress can be very visible. Better performance. More data. Stronger mechanisms. A successful pilot. A positive study. Outside the company, there is already something happening. A clinician already treats in a certain way. A pharma team already has a process to make development decisions. A food company already has products, suppliers and margins. A farmer already has an intervention they trust.

The status quo is not empty.

Something is already working, even if not perfectly.

My recommendation

Before asking what more the science needs, I would ask what has to become different outside the company. What are we asking somebody to stop, start or change? How difficult is that change? And is our evidence strong enough not only to prove the science, but to give somebody a reason to do something differently?

Because the real competitor may not be another microbiome company.

It may simply be what happens today.

Or is the harder problem giving somebody enough reason to change what they already do?

Deeper Analysis

When the science leaves the building

This is where I think microbiome businesses become particularly interesting. An asset can look stronger and stronger from inside the company while remaining surprisingly easy to ignore from outside.

A microbiome platform may generate insight that no other technology can produce. Good. But the pharma team already has a way to decide which programmes move forward. The question is not only whether the microbiome insight is interesting. It is whether it changes that decision.

A microbial ingredient may show a real biological effect. Again, good. But a food company already has a formulation, suppliers, claims, margins and manufacturing constraints. The effect has to matter enough to disturb some of that.

A microbiome therapeutic may produce encouraging clinical data. But the patient is not treated in a vacuum. There is already a pathway. A standard of care. Prescribing habits. Reimbursement logic.

Agriculture is no different. A biological intervention may work. But it still has to compete with weather, variability, farm practice, economics and something the farmer already knows how to use.

This is where I think microbiome companies can sometimes misread resistance. The conclusion becomes: the market is not ready. Perhaps. But sometimes the market is perfectly ready. Ready for what it already has.

That is a much harder problem.

It means the next piece of evidence may not be the study that makes the biology even more convincing. It may be the evidence that makes the existing behaviour more difficult to defend.

The proof that changes a development decision. The outcome that justifies a reformulation. The improvement that makes switching worthwhile. The result that still matters under ordinary use, not only during a pilot.

This is also why first sales can tell us less than we think. Interest can get somebody through the door. Novelty can support a pilot. A senior sponsor can carry a project for some time.

Then normal life comes back.

Budgets tighten. Existing processes reappear. People return to what they know. Sometimes because it is easier. Sometimes because it is good enough.

That is when the proposition is really tested. Not when somebody says yes once. When going back starts to make less sense.

This changes how I would think about evidence too.

The next study should not automatically be the one that adds the most scientific depth. It may need to be the one that gives somebody enough confidence to make a different decision.

Those are not always the same study.

The microbiome has generated a great deal of scientific possibility. The next phase may depend less on showing, again, that microbes matter. We know that already.

The harder part is giving somebody a good enough reason to change what they already do.

Three questions for the executive team

  • What existing behaviour are we actually trying to change?
  • Is our evidence strong enough to justify that change?
  • If the science succeeds, what becomes more difficult to keep doing the old way?
